Green Grew the Linden Tree

“Lipa zelenela je” (Green Grew the Linden Tree), a beloved Slovenian song by Davorin Jenko, reimagined in 2024 for voice, piano, and cello in a jazz-inspired, improvisational setting. The piece retains the tender lyricism and nostalgic atmosphere of the original, now enriched with colourful harmonies, flexible phrasing, and expressive interaction between the instruments. The cello provides warmth and counterpoint to the piano's flowing textures and the vocal line, which is sung in the original Slovene language, accompanied by the composer’s English translation. This arrangement invites interpretive freedom and is ideal for concert programs exploring folk heritage through a contemporary, improvisational lens.
